Day 13: Authentic

“Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity.” –Brene’ Brown

Be Quiet. Sit still and silent for 3 minutes. Let your mind be aware that God is present with you. When you get distracted, don’t fight with yourself. Simply turn your thoughts again to Him. Imagine the delight your Father feels because you showed-up to be with Him! Breathe slowly and relax.

Scripture. We can say with confidence and a clear conscience that we have lived with a God-given holiness and sincerity in all our dealings. We have depended on God’s grace, not on our own human wisdom. That is how we have conducted ourselves before the world, and especially toward you.” — 1 Corinthians 1:12

Meditation. It’s been said that authenticity is the battle cry of young adults today. Perhaps feeling fed-up with the pretentious ideals of their parents, they want to remove the masks and express themselves. They do it publicly with body art, all-occasion athleisure, agile job-hopping; and privately, in lingering conversations at trendy coffeeshops in urban centers. Yet, an authentic lifestyle isn’t easily defined and may be even harder to recognize in the church.

Here are 2 quotes that offer a little more to think about:

“Our deepest calling is to grow into our own authentic self-hood, whether or not it conforms to some image of who we ought to be. As we do so, we will not only find the joy that every human being seeks, we will also find our path of authentic service in the world” –Parker J. Palmer

“Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability, and authenticity. If we want greater clarity in our purpose or deeper and more meaningful spiritual lives, vulnerability is the path.”. –Brene’ Brown

Question to Ponder. Based on the scripture reading, the 2 quotes and any other sources, what do you think it looks like when a Christian community is authentic?

Connect with God. Get quiet again before the Lord. Ask Him to enlighten your heart with a vision of authenticity in your relationships.

Connect with Others. Please, please leave a comment today! Tell us what it looks like to you when a Christian community is authentic. This could be an amazing conversation!
