Day 14: Ancestry.bomb (Part 1)

God’s heart passionately overflows to be in covenant relationship with His people.”

Be Quiet. Sit still and silent for 3 minutes. Let your mind be aware that God is present with you. When you get distracted, don’t fight with yourself. Simply turn your thoughts again to Him. Imagine the delight your Father feels because you showed-up to be with Him! Breathe slowly and relax.

Scripture: Exodus 34: 6-7. “And he (God) passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”

Meditation. Who would doubt they’ve taken on some things from their ancestors? Facial features, personality traits, speech-patterns, and genetic propensities that affect physical/mental health. But how do you read, “he punishes the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation?” Does it sound unjust? Is the fifth- generation off the hook?

Read in context, God’s heart passionately overflows to be in covenant relationship with His people. Moses was on the mountain (again) meeting with God to certify the terms of the covenant, the law. Last time they met, God’s people got frustrated and betrayed Him. They created an idol to worship, a golden calf. This is like the bride making out with the best man during the wedding ceremony. It’s astonishing that God remains faithful, compassionate, and forgiving to these perpetual adulterers! Yet He issues a warning to future generations: if you repeat the sins of your ancestors, you will be held accountable. So, don’t presume upon God’s gracious nature. There’s no excuse for betraying Him. Accountability is a term of the covenant.

Question to Ponder. Think about your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents. What do you know about their relationships with God? What have you taken on from them?

Connect with God. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you about the New Covenant. Read Hebrews 8. Here’s a link: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews%208&version=NIV

Connect with Others. Talk to someone in your family about your spiritual ancestry. Ask them to share what they remember. Also share more about what you know with your children and grandchildren.
