Day 17: The Flipside of Yeast

Yesterday we explored the idea that even a small amount of leaven can spread through and enliven a bread dough, transforming it from a lifeless mound of flour, water, and salt into a life-sustaining substance.

But Jesus also used yeast as a warning. Its ability to quickly spread applies not only to the kingdom of Heaven, but also to the wrong teachings of the religious leaders.

“Be careful,” Jesus said to (His disciples). “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” (Matthew 16:6)

The disciples didn’t get Jesus’ message; they thought He was getting on them for not bringing any bread on their journey. But I don’t want to focus on their ignorance today. Instead, check out Jesus’ message.

“But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees,” Jesus reiterated later in the conversation (Matthew 16:11)

As we discussed yesterday, it only takes a small amount of yeast to impact a massive batch of dough. Similarly, the false teachings of the religious leaders had the potential to quickly spread and impact the minds of the people.

Remember in the fall of 2019 when the Popeyes chicken sandwich briefly took over the world? The demand for this fast food item was so intense that people waited for hours in drive-thrus to get their hands on it. Some Popeyes even ran out of chicken and had to turn away patrons.

I tried the sandwich, and it was incredible; this hefty chicken breast featured a wonderful crunchy exterior while remaining moist on the inside, while the mayo and pickles added a cooling element and acid, respectively. It wasn’t hard to see why people obsessed over this thing.

However, it also contained nearly 700 calories and a whopping 42 grams of fat without adding any sides or a drink. Though the sandwich’s popularity swept the nation, it wasn’t necessarily good for the people.

The Pharisees and Sadducees, while different groups of people, were both trying to discredit Jesus and spoil His mission. Jesus warned the apostles to remain on guard against their lies at all times.

What “yeast” exists in today’s world that threatens to cover up Jesus’ mission?
