DAY 26: “Teach the Children”

“There are so many “paths” out there today, but only one right path. Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and the Life.”

I love music! If someone asks me, “What is your favorite kind of music?,” I usually answer: “Whatever project I’m currently working on or listening to.”  Isn’t it amazing how music can be so personal that thousands of people can relate to the same song at the same time, but in different ways?  There have been times when we have heard a song and immediately connected it to an experience we had when that song was popular.

One such song is “Teach Your Children” by Crosby, Still, Nash, and Young. It was written in (wait for it…) 1970. It has been used in many TV series (The Wonder Years, Glee, and The Office, etc.), movies ,and commercials. In 1985 it was used in a commercial for the Apple II computer. (That’s kickin’ it old school!) The idea was “to show how to prepare your kids for the modern world.” Isn’t it interesting that the “world” has related to this song and has used it to make a point about how to teach our kids? As parents, grandparents, and mentors, we all want to do that. However, we don’t want the world teaching our children. Good news…. God has given us the best plan — His blueprint — on how to teach our kids and prepare them for the modern world! The Bible is the ultimate playbook with every strategy we will ever need to train them up in the way that they are to go.

“Listen, my child, to what your father teaches you.  Don’t neglect your mother’s teaching. What you learn from them will crown you with grace and clothe you with honor.” – Proverbs 1:8-9

God desires godly training and care of our children. We need parents, grandparents, mentors, and trusted friends to speak life and truth into our children. We are to lovingly teach them His ways and His Word, which is the truth. The truth will then crown them with grace (favor) and clothe them with honor (high respect and integrity).

“Teach your children to choose the right path, and when they are older, they will remain upon it.” – Proverbs 22:6

There are so many “paths” out there today, but only one right path.  Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and the Life. Our children need to know that He is the only path that brings life. It takes time and effort to train them up in the ways of the Lord. It’s a crazy world out there! We need to give them quality and quantity time. Life can get busy. When it gets hard we must remember that we are girding them with the armor of God’s Word. When they face battles, they will be better equipped to fight and win! If we teach them according to God’s Word, the Bible says that when they are older, they will stay on the right path.

“O my people, listen to my teaching. Open your ears to what I am saying, for I will speak to you in a parable. I will teach you hidden lessons from our past—stories we have heard and know, stories our ancestors handed down to us.  We will not hide these truths from our children but will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the LORD.  We will tell of his power and the mighty miracles he did.  For he issued his decree to Jacob; he gave his law to Israel. He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children, so the next generation might know them—even the children not yet born—that they in turn might teach their children. So each generation can set its hope anew on God, remembering his glorious miracles and obeying his commands.” – Psalm 78: 1-7

I love Psalm 78 for so many reasons! This is the highpoint after the teaching of the Word! The teaching of the Word builds the foundation that our faith stands on. It’s like building a house. If you have a good foundation, the house will be stronger and will be able to withstand the storms of life. But here is the best part… as we gird our children with the truth of God’s Word, the Bible says we are also to testify of the goodness of God! We are to tell the next generation about all the amazing things that God did and is doing in our lives! Testimony increases faith! As faith increases, it helps others to build their faith as well! In Verse 4, it says we will not hide them from our children or their children. The house will get stronger as we testify to God’s wonder, working power and miracles in our life. Verse 5 tells us that our ancestors were commanded to tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord. Why? So the next generation might know them — even the children not yet born — that they, in turn, might teach their children!  What a legacy! Can you see that as faith increases the house gets stronger and stronger? Each generation can set its’ hope anew on God as they remember his glorious miracles and obey his commands.

So, whether you are a father, mother, grandpa, grandma, mentor, or teacher, as yourself if you are passing on the truth of God’s Word to someone. Are you helping build a house that will testify to the goodness of God throughout the generations? Teach the children. Share the stories of His faithfulness, His goodness, His mercy! Tell of His miracles in your life to your family, children, and friends. Faith will arise, the house will get stronger, and God will be glorified!

May your faith filled stories fill your house this Christmas season and may you see God’s richest blessings as you testify to His goodness!

Shalom,
