“Jesus came to give us abundant life.
He wants us to have “Zoe life,” which means “the God kind” of life.”
I have a pillow on my family room couch that says “Live, Laugh, Love.” It is a brightly colored pillow and gives the room a little “pop of color.” It is there to remind me to do just that: live, laugh, and love! The thing is, when it is out of sight, I sometimes get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and forget to do just that. Today is December 7. That means we have 17 days until Christmas Eve! How are you doing? Are you living, laughing, and loving the way you want to, or is your brightly colored pillow out of sight and you need a little reminder?
“Jesus said, ‘The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give life, in all its fullness.’” – John 10:10
Jesus came to give us abundant life. He wants us to have “Zoe life,” which means “the God kind” of life. That is what John 10:10 is talking about. He wants us to savor the moments, create memories, experience life in all its fullness! That means live, laugh, and love! If I were to ask, “What is the spiritual climate in your house right now?”, how would you answer? Is it Grumpy Gus or Frenzied Faith? Hopefully it’s Jubilant Jesus!
“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice — the kind he will accept. When you think of what he has done for you, is this too much to ask? Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is.” – Romans 12:1-2
When our house gets worn or outdated, we renovate it to bring it back to life. We must do the same with our soul (our mind, will, and emotions). There are patterns and models in the world that try to get us to fit into their way of doing things or their way of thinking. God is the only one who has the patterns that bring life (and life to the full). It’s only through God’s Word that we can learn His patterns, renewing and transforming our minds to be more like Jesus. How do we know if this transformation is taking place? We will bear the fruit of the Spirit of God and not of the world. We will live in the world but not be of the world.
“But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, He will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” – Galatians 5:22
“Oh boy,” you say, “that’s a tall order!” Yes, but we have the Holy Spirit to help us! God’s pattern is easy: more Jesus; more fruit! We can’t do anything in our own strength, so the Holy Spirit is there to help us with whatever we need. For the holidays, what do you need a little more of? If you are doing good in the joy category, but need a little help in the self-control area, then ask Him to help you in that department! Maybe it’s patience with Cousin Larry or love for Aunt June? Ask the Holy Spirit for more love and gentleness when you are around them. Meditate on the love of God. That will spill over into all the fruits of the Spirit.
“Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is born of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God-for God is love.” – 1 John 4:7
This holiday season, God wants us to live life to the full, laugh with those we love, and love because He first loved us. As we abide in Him, we will bear the fruit of the Spirit and greet the holidays with a little “pop of color” of our own. As we daily renew our minds with the Word, He will transform us into His image, and we will be become more like Him. We will live differently, laugh louder, and love more passionately than before! This will transfer to making the holidays the best time of the year!
So go for it! May your pop of color be bright this year!
