“Christmas is about giving”
Happy Christmas Eve! Tonight, people all over the world celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! We gather with family and friends, attend Christmas Eve services, open presents, eat way too much food, and hopefully have fun in the midst of it all!
Christmas is about giving.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16
Every time I see this verse, I think about what it would be like if I had to give my only son Ian as a sacrifice for the world. That puts it into perspective quickly. It is hard to wrap your brain around that. Yet, God loved us so much that He gave us Jesus in the form of a baby, born in a manger, to save the entire world. This was His love displayed and made manifest in an infinitely glorious manner!
“For God so loved the world.” The word “loved” means unconditional love, love by choice, and by an act of the will. This word in the Greek is “Agapao.” Agapao will never seek anything but the highest good for fellow mankind. It doesn’t need a chemistry, an affinity, or a feeling. That is so different than the love that the world knows. God gave unconditionally, by choice, so that anyone who would believe in Jesus would not perish and have eternal life. Agapao is perfect love, modeled through the gift of Jesus.
“In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” – John 1:1-2
“And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” – John 1:14
“The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel-which means “God with us.” – Matthew 1:24
The song “Love Came Down at Christmas” is an old hymn that we used to sing at Christmas in my home church. The words are timeless and so aptly describe what God did for us by giving us Jesus.
“Love Came Down at Christmas” by Christina Rosetti (1830-1894)
Love came down at Christmas,
Love all lovely, Love divine;
Love was born at Christmas.
Star and angels gave the sign.
Worship we the Godhead,
Love incarnate, Love divine;
Worship we our Jesus:
But wherewith for sacred sign?
Love shall be our token,
Love be yours and love be mine,
Love to God and all men,
Love for plea and gift and sign.
May we be filled with the “Agapao” love of God, and may that love spill over to everyone we meet this Christmas! May joy fill your house, may peace rule in your home, and may Jesus reign in your heart today and forevermore!
