DAY 41: “It’s New Wine Time!”

“…to receive the “new” we must let go of the old first”

Christmas is over, the relatives have gone home, the house needs cleaning, kids are running around, and you find yourself saying: “Order! I need order in the court!” Only a few days left until the New Year, so how do I make the most of it?

The week between Christmas and New Year’s is a great time to think about what we want the next year to look like. It gives us an opportunity to reflect on the old and embrace the new that is coming. One thing I have found is that no matter how bad of a year you had, you can start fresh again! God always has a plan and no matter how rough the wind and waves get, if we keep our eyes on Jesus, He will show us the way — He is the way! He reveals the truth to us and gives us life!

“Jesus came so we could have life, and life to the full.” – John 10:10

If 2021 wasn’t life to the full, then you can close the door to the things that need to be forgotten and open the door to the new in 2022!  Jesus wants that for us even more than we do!

“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. The old skins would burst from the pressure, spilling the wine, and ruining the skins. New wine must be stored in new wineskins.  That way both the wine and the wineskins are preserved.” – Matthew 9:17

Jesus also said that nobody should put a patch of new cloth on an old garment either! If something is completely worn out, we usually replace it with something new!

In Jesus’s day wineskins were created from animal skins. When a wineskin is first cleaned and ready, it is flexible and very stretchy. It could expand as the liquid inside of it fermented and gave off gases during the transformation into wine. When a wineskin is old, it is brittle, closed off and inflexible. It eventually bursts spilling the wine and destroying the skin!

We need a new wineskin for 2022! It’s New Wine Time! God is ready to pour out His goodness upon us, but we can’t put it in an old wineskin. He has soooo much for us in this New Year to do. He has people to meet, places to go, and things for us to do! Our wineskins are tired and some are even about to burst!  They are dry, cracked and a little leaky. It’s time to trade them in for a new one.

How do we do that? By giving Him the old one and allowing Him to exchange it for the new! Notice, I said allow.  So often we hang onto things because they are comfortable. It might not be comfortable letting go of the old wineskin, but to receive the “new” we must let go of the old first. This week, I encourage you to spend time with the Lord and ask Him about 2022. It is the year of new things coming for you. The new wine that He is about to pour is full of His goodness and mercy and it will carry you through the next season!

Here are a couple of things you can do:

  1. Spend quality time with the Lord. Worship, then listen. Really As you spend time with the Lord ask Him what things you need to let go of. Write them down. Any disappointment, discouragement, despair, or things that may have tried to weigh you down. Any thought, emotion, or habit, you may want to change. Have everyone the family do this. Put them all in a bucket and declare that they are dead and gone and never coming back! Plead the blood of Jesus over them. Light them on fire and burn them up!
  2. Praise God for all He has done this year! Praise Him in advance for all He is going to do! Ask Him to show you the plans and dreams He has for you this upcoming year. What are the desires of your heart that He has placed there for such a time as this? There can be different types of dreams from personal to family dreams. Give everyone a list so you can be praying for each other. If anything is too personal that’s ok. Leave it off the list and keep it on your own personal one. Put it before your eyes so you can see it every day.
  3. Keep a record or journal of all God does this year. He is good and His mercies are new every day. Watch what He is about to do with you, through you and for you in 2022!

The next year will be one of restoration and repair. God is rebuilding, rewiring, and repurposing His people! We must have a new wineskin to hold all the new wine God is about to pour upon us!

The new wine of 2022 is going to be sweeter than we have ever tasted before! New ways are coming! Be greatly encouraged as God will finish what He has started. You will look back at this time next year and marvel at how truly good God is.

Shalom,

Mama Swan
