DAY 9: But What About Works?

But Megan, what about where it talks about that we need faith AND corresponding works?

Smart cookie! I’m glad you asked.

James 2:14-20

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works…

Again, I love how practical God is.

As we touched on yesterday, God’s love isn’t driven by our actions.

However, as we grow in Him, we obviously want to become more like Him and therefore better people. And if we are defining “better” as more like Him, and God IS love, then that would mean that our hearts are becoming more loving, too.

God is Love, and if we’re to be like God then we’ll love one another (1 John 4:7-21)

Faith works by love (Gal 5:6)

Cool. Ya with me?

So as the scripture says above, if someone is naked in front of you, don’t just pray “God bless you, I pray that supernaturally clothes show up on your body and SOMEBODY gives you this blessing of warmth.”

No, goober. That would a) be really, really, weird. And b) absolutely impractical.

Instead, give them your own coat, or go to Walmart and buy them something, AND pray for them.

Because that’s what love, aka God, would do.

Now… this doesn’t mean that every need in the world is your responsibility, you do away with all boundaries, and overextend yourself to the point of where you’re exhausted, broke, and don’t have your own basic necessities either.

But God loves all of His kids, and wants them taken care of.

So the next time God’s voice tugs at your heart (usually through a gentle thought that pops into your head), give it a listen and take action.

I promise your heart will grow 5 sizes, kinda like the Grinch. But not the Grinch, cuz you’re a human.

See you tomorrow!
