Day 9: Human Being – Before Human Doing

…“Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing…  – Luke 10:41

Be Quiet.  Sit still and silent for 2 minutes.  Let your mind be aware that God is present with you. When you get distracted, don’t fight with yourself.  Simply turn your thoughts again to Him.  Imagine the delight your Father feels because you showed-up to be with Him!  Breath slowly and relax.

Scripture.  “Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing.  Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”  Luke 10:38-42

Meditation.  I never tire of getting my priorities set straight when I read this story.  Mary and Martha lived a few miles outside Jerusalem, and Jesus wanted to be with them.  Martha was the responsible big sister, the one who owned and opened her home to Jesus. Mary was the younger sister, the one who offered and opened her heart to Jesus.  Irritable Martha allowed her tasks to occupy her attention while un-offended Mary locked-in on Jesus, quietly listening.  The sisters were equally cherished by Jesus.  And as humans, they had the capacity to rank for themselves the importance of being with Jesus and doing for Jesus.  Mary chose human being before human doing.  Jesus, validated her, “Mary has chosen the better part.”

Question to Ponder.  What would motivate you to be before you do as a way of life with Jesus?

  • My interior world would become more peaceful
  • I’d be positioned for deeper intimacy with Jesus
  • I’d learn wisdom for making great decisions
  • I’d be authentic, setting an example worth following
  • I’d have more to give away spiritually
  • I would be less exhausted from over-functioning
  • I’d rely on God more than myself
  • Other

Connect with God.  Turn to God in prayer about what you discovered as motivations to be before you do.  Ask God to:  1). Confirm your motivations, and 2) Lead you to a spiritual mentor or director if you don’t already have one

Connect with Others.    Take that step!  Reach out and ask someone further along the spiritual journey to talk to you about God’s movements in your life.
