Week 9 • Day 2 • Ponder

“It happens so regularly that it’s predictable. The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly delight in God’s commands, but it’s pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge.
Romans 7:21-23 (MSG)

I’ve made a commitment to no longer use cutting sarcasm when in a disagreement with my husband. I know, I know. Thank you, I try my best [slowly bows].

Just this morning, right on cue, we found ourselves in a teensy disagreement. Aha! My first opportunity to practice the new me! I revved myself up. “Once he’s done saying things I really don’t like, I’m going to use patience and gentleness in response!” I took a deep breath and prayed the Holy Spirit harness my tongue and help me speak only love …

Then I got hip checked out of the way by Tina (my rebel side) who completely took over and started spouting off serious sass. I was shocked! What is this? Who was that? What’s happening here?

It’s called being human. And we desperately need God’s help.

Paul gets it. He struggled too. He had a rebellious part of him that would take over, and right when he least expected it, take charge.

Does this ever happen to you? What can you do about it?

It’s something worth pondering.
