Day 3: How To Hear The Voice of God

Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you.

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.

-John 10: 25-29

Sheep. Little followers that bahhhhh, bahhhhh, bahhhh all day long. I’ve never quite likened myself to be a sheep, have you?

However, a few years ago God took me on a journey of understanding Him as Shepherd for the first time and, suddenly, being a sheep became much more appealing.

As Americans, we’re taught our whole lives to hustle, hustle, hustle for the American Dream. I’m definitely in that camp as an entrepreneur. However, when God took me on this journey, I realized that life wasn’t just about speed or accomplishment — it was about relationships. And through a deeper, more intimate relationship with God, it would actually lead me into the desires He put in my heart in the first place. (Psalm 37:4)

Our God is so intentional and wonderful. In a world full of American-Hustlers where everything is fast or it isn’t fun, today I encourage you to slow down and see the beauty of being led by a Shepherd.

For one, Good Shepherds tell us where to go.

Second, Shepherds have a recognizable voice that will never lead us astray.

So today, I encourage you to be a sheep. Slow down and listen for the Good Shepherd’s voice.

How? I’d love to give you some practical tips on how to do that.

  1. Give Him Your Time.

If you don’t slow down and make space — and I mean carved-out, put it in your Google Calendar like its an appointment space — and show up like it’s a meeting. Your expectation will determine the level of your encounter. He’s ready, but will you show up?

  1. Quiet The Busy Mind

I don’t know about you, but my mind likes to sprint. From the second I wake up, the list starts rolling like toilet paper down a flight of stairs.

So how do we manage our minds? Keep a journal, and after you’ve set aside quiet time for yourself and the Lord, I encourage you to write that running list until it stops. You see, God gave us a mind, will, and emotions that are inhabited inside our soul. There’s not something wrong with you just because your mind races. We just have to use tools that will help to kick our souls into gear, rather than letting them run and ruin our day.

I start with a blank sheet in my journal every morning and write until I feel satisfied with my list. Then, even during my designated God time I keep the list handy so that if another thought about my errands, work, or home life tries to infiltrate my mind, I simply write it down and get back into the Jesus-zone.

Try this for a week — I promise it’ll blow your mind!

  1. Declare and Decree

I can’t tell you how much this has changed my life. Every day, I walk around my apartment with my coffee in hand and start praying out loud blessing over my life. This includes my family, myself (mind, body, spirit, emotions, relationships, etc), my calling, my business, my property, and anything else I feel like needs the blood of Jesus.

Just 3-5 minutes of this sets the whole tone of my day and kicks the devil to the curb. I promise you, it’s like a whole new person (the Spirit Man, Jesus living inside of you as the Prince of Peace) stands up on the inside at attention, ready to mount guard over your heart and mind all day. (Philippians 4:7) Why? Because that’s what the WORD does! God is so cool.

So let’s choose to prime ourselves for hearing Him! Let’s slow down, make space, clear out our loud souls, and decree what we want to see in our lives!

Are you ready to hear from God and have an awesome day? Let’s go!

See you tomorrow,

Megan
