Day 4: What Does His Voice Sound Like?

The LORD said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.  After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.  When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’

All I have to say is… WHAAAAAAAAT?

Is He ALL of these things?

Is He none of these things?

How am I supposed to figure this out?

Ya. I’ve been there too. And coming from a musical family I can safely say that this has been a running joke in our family of songwriters for twenty-plus years.

It ain’t a Christian worship song if it doesn’t compare God’s voice to something in nature.

Ha. There are so many funny YouTube videos, you should definitely look up if you love a laugh.

Joking aside, I have something quite exciting to tell you.

Yes, God’s voice can be all of these things. And so much more.

Sometimes, He’s as booming as thunder.

Other times, His voice is described as a soft whisper.

Why does this matter? How does this apply to us now?

The point I want to make today is the beauty of how He can be all of these things.

What constitutes these choices? God is so attuned to us that He gives us what we need at the moment.

In fact, I think we forget how smart He is sometimes.

Not to mention, the Holy Spirit lives inside of us. So like… He REALLY knows us better than we know ourselves. #Creator.

That means, sometimes we need God to be loud. We might be on the verge of a really destructive choice and out of love, He chooses to make a lot of noise at that moment.

In another instance, we might be going through a time where we’re really down. We wake up every day and criticize ourselves from the second our eyes open. In those times, He may show up as The Comforter through a gentle whisper.

How amazing is our God?

No matter how He shows up, I want you to know today that He is a loving God. He IS love, according to John. So if He is love, He can’t be hate. Romans 8:1 tells us that there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. That means, He can’t condemn you, even if His voice is correcting you.

How awesome is THAT!?

Today, I encourage and challenge you to start listening for what version of His voice is speaking to you today. And remember, through whom the Father loves He corrects, He never condemns. (Hebrews 12:6)

He is FOR you!

Praying BIG love over you today.
